Well, D finally convinced me to use these logs for more than just projects. [laughs] Our conversations always start out the same way:
[D]: Hey, how’s it going?
[N]: What? How did you get this frequency?
[D]: Ancient Chinese secret. Now listen.
We proceed from our conversation from there. D is always doing advanced work with metals; he loves every second of it. Luckily, he has a kid to share his enthusiasm with now. Marten’s nearly a spitting image of D, even after the augs D needed after that accident. [pause]
Right, augs. I’ll assume whoever is reading this has no idea what those are. Anyway, augs are short for augmentations. They are electromechanical devices that are used to enhance or add onto our bodies natural abilities. I have a couple of augmentations myself, mostly to help with my work (which I will get to later).
Probably the one I use the most is the Retinal Prosthesis augmentation, which basically allows me to have a heads up display in my vision. It’s useful for communication and navigation, but it also comes in handy when referencing wiring and hydraulic diagrams, which allows me to overlay an image on top of the actual lines. Not only does it eliminate having to look away at a reference to double check my work, it makes it nearly foolproof when connecting multiple junctions together.
Plus, it comes in handy when using the Infolink, another augmentation that allows me to communicate with others. If you have the Infolink and Retinal Prosthesis, you can send and receive video and pictures that help with the conversation. Very handy when El starts talking about some rare oxygen producing bacteria of chemical value (verified by R) found in the dung of micro bats living in a 50 meter deep sinkhole somewhere in the mountainous jungles of Borneo. Or, as D so eloquently describes it, “the middle of bum-f*** nowhere”.
Although El does have an interesting story of an uncontacted tribe when we lost one of our birds in severe weather over that area. E wrote an amazing piece on that, and, as with many of the things that E writes about, will probably be turned into a movie.
Anyway, the Infolink is a real handy way to remain in contact with the others. [pause]
Well, most of the time. At least once a month, someone who shall remain nameless almost always starts a “who Infolinks the cutest puppy picture” war. Inevitably, this happens when I am meeting with the top brass doing the “why you should buy [REDACTED]” spiel. One of these wars went on for an entire friggin’ week, which is another story.
Back to the augmentations. The other two that I use are called Capture and Robot Domination. These are especially important as they allow me to interface and “talk” to other computers and AI as though I was a computer myself. Thankfully, these augs were made by Sarif Industries. Sarif uses proprietary interfacing software, while their competitor Tai Yong Medical went with software that was based off of, well, Windows 12. Ever seen a human get a computer virus? It ain’t pretty, especially if they have a lot of augmentation work.
Why do I have so few augmentations? A couple of reasons. One is that I am waiting for nanotechnology augmentations, as I would rather have systems that can work with my body, rather than having to replace various parts (although it still is tempting to replace half my skeleton just to get the Icarus Landing System). Two, this is all I need to do my job (which requires designing and building aircraft and the AI they are paired with). But the most important reason is that they do not introduce large quantities of metal or electronics into my system.
This is because of what I started working on. [pause] I haven’t told anyone about it yet, not even D or R. It’s still in the early stages, I don’t know if it will work or not. Hell, I am not even entirely sure how it works! But if it does work, it has the potential to be big. What we are calling it right now is the Magnetic Repulsion Drive, or MRD for short. The test device is essentially two axles with shaped magnets spaced evenly along its axis. Just sitting there, it does what all magnets do, attract and repel. However, get it spinning fast enough, and something weird happens.
To the best of our knowledge, the magnetic fields start to get “wrapped” around the axles. It stretches until the fields magnetically reconnect at the bottom of the drive, exerting a considerable amount of force. We have been able to control the direction and intensity of the fields, correspondingly we can change and direct the thrust that the drive produces. While this looks promising for application in STOL and VTOL craft, what I envision for [REDACTED] is the production of spacecraft that are able to efficiently enter and exit the planet’s gravitational fields. If we can pull this off, there is a good chance that we can become and interplanetary species within the next couple of decades. [pause] Hopefully Picus will actually support us this time.
I know there are a couple of people who can’t wait to leave this planet, and no, they are not all from Ohio. I remember R was talking about wanting to do a couple of experiments in zero gravity. And D would probably want to (what else?) pour metal in zero-g, though I am not sure how well that would work. I don’t know what the others would do, but I’ll contact them if this pans out. Hopefully … [unidentified sound] Well, it looks like were spooling up the drive again. I’ll call it the end of log one.
